The third race of the season 2023 in Aquila Formula 1000 is decided during the weekend by the Copenhagen Racing GP at Sturup Raceway outside Malmö.
After an incredibly tight and exciting start to the season, an important weekend awaits in the Nordic’s Premier entry-level series in formula car racing, when nearly 15 cars settle for the championship points in Skåne.
Denmark’s Kevin Suenson leads the Senior Championship after two races but is chased closely behind by Elias Adestam, who took his first victory in Aquila two weeks ago at Gelleråsen.
– It will be fun for me to come back to Sturup for the first time in four years. I remember the track as a lot of fun, and looking forward to drive here again. It looks like there may be some rain this weekend, which opens up for an exciting race, says Adestam, who since the last stage was the fastest when the all-electric junior series NXTGenCup ran its pre-season test at Gelleråsen.
– I come to Sturup with a good feeling after Gelleråsen, and will do everything I can to repeat the victory and the fantastic feeling we had a few weeks ago, continues Adestam.
Joel Granfors, who has won two weekends out of three in this year’s Aquila Formula 1000, is not at Sturup. Joel is in the USA for the fifth round of the USF Pro 2000 where Granfors is second in the championship. However, Joel’s brother Linus Granfors, who leads the championship in Formula Nordic after eight consecutive victories, joins the Aquila races at Sturup.
Dante Johansson is still at the top in the Junior championship, just ahead of Richard Olsson and Robin Hafström, who was the best junior at Gelleråsen. Viktor Karlsson and Andreas Skatteboe are chasing just outside the podium in the very tight table.
Last year’s rookie champion Christian Lovén has had a challenging start to the season, and is eighth in the championship ahead of this weekend’s competition. Lovén is eager for revenge, when the Aquila Formula 1000 comes to a track he really enjoys.
– We are aware that the season has not gone exactly as we had planned so far, but I am determined to make the best of the situation. We continue to work hard to find optimizations and improve our driving. Despite the challenges we face, we have nevertheless had some positive progress. And we’ll keep improving, says Christian Lovén.
– We also know that we gave a real fight at Sturup last season and I think we can do the same now.
The quick Portuguese driver Rodrigo Seabra has had a good start to his debut season in formula car, and is currently sixth in the standings, only three points behind teammate Alexia Danielsson, heading into the weekend.
– It is exciting to be back at Sturup, as it is a track that suits the Aquila cars perfectly. The weekend starts already on Friday with training all day, which means that most will have time to sort out the cars properly before the weekend’s race, says Michael Karpers, promoter for Aquila Formula 1000.
– The fact that Linus Granfors will also make a guest appearance during the weekend is great fun. After all, Linus won the Aquila series in 2021, and currently leads Formula Nordic, having won 8 races out of a possible 8 so far. I’m convinced of that Linus’s entry will spice things up even more!
The weekend begins with tests, qualifying and race one on Saturday, with two more races on Sunday.
The weekend are livestreamed at Svensk Bilsport TV and Aquila Formula 1000’s own Youtube-channel.
